Surgical Guidelines

Patients are invited to attend our monthly seminar where you will be educated on the surgical options available. You are also invited to attend the support group meeting immediately following the seminar.

If you decide to proceed, you will visit with your surgeon. He will direct your care throughout your experience. All individuals will undergo laboratory tests, xrays and a full medical evaluation, including a consultation with a medical specialist. You will also visit with a nutritionist who will discuss specifics of your expected post-operative diet. You will also have a psychological evaluation. Additional tests may be required based on each individuals personal clinical assessment.

Following your surgery you will visit with your surgeon (not a nurse or a physicians assistant) on a regular basis. The visits typically occur at about one week post-op, then six weeks, three months, 6 months for the 1st 2 years, then annually. More frequent visits may be required, especially if you undergo Lap-Band placement and require adjustments. You are strongly encouraged to attend the monthly New U support group meetings, as an important adjunct to your progress. You should begin a regular exercise program and, dependent on the procedure that you undergo, you may require dietary supplements.
