Medical techniques and practices can be tracked thousands of years, but the field of bariatrics is an extremely new response to a nearly ancient condition – obesity. The first account of surgery for massive obesity was by Viktor Henrikson in the 1950s when a massive small bowel resection was performed, leaving a ‘short bowel.’

The evolution of these surgeries has brought us a variety of reversible and non-reversible procedures to lengthen life and increase the quality of life for overweight patients.

The bariatric surgeons practicing in the Surgeons Group of Baton Rouge are Louisiana natives who bring national and international flare to the group by distinguishing themselves with advanced research and techniques in this changing field.
